The World's First 5G-A Smart Airport Sensory Integration Base station has been Constructed

Mar 27,2024

According to reports, the world's first 5G-A smart airport sensory integration base station was recently completed and opened at Yunnan Baoshan Yunrui Airport, which is the first time that 5G-A sensory integration technology and artificial intelligence have been applied in the construction of a smart airport.

"Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC), based on the existing cellular mobile communication network (communication capability) and superimposed with radar-like functions (sensing capability), detects and tracks objects such as drones, cars, ships, etc. in the vicinity. 5G-A's Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC), based on the existing cellular mobile communication network (communication capability), overlaid with radar-like functionality (sensing capability) to detect and track objects such as drones, cars, or ships in the vicinity. 5G-A's Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) requires that its own AAU (active antennae) is capable of providing independent earth-to-ground and air-to-air beams: both communication and sensing beams.
According to the introduction, the theoretical peak rate of 5G-A can reach 10Gbps, with millisecond delay and centimeter-level positioning accuracy, while the introduction of the pass-sense integration, artificial intelligence and other technologies, can better match the car networking, high-end manufacturing, sensing and other applications.

The 5G-A integrated communication and sensing technology can be used to prevent airport intrusion by integrating communication, sensing, arithmetic and other technologies, automatically identifying and warning of potential security risks, upgrading from "human defense" to "technical defense", and effectively improving the safety of airport airspace and runways. It can automatically identify and warn potential security risks.

In comparison, traditional airport runway intrusion prevention uses manual inspection and radar, which has problems such as monitoring blind spots and equipment power loss. The monitoring platform docked with the 5G-A base station is capable of sensing and tracking drones, birds, vehicles and personnel activities within the airport in real time in low altitude scenarios, while analyzing and processing the sensed data with artificial intelligence technology to more accurately identify objects and related activities.

In the past, the perception of drones on the flight path could only achieve real-time tracking and presentation of trajectories, but after the introduction of 5G-A technology, it can achieve trajectory prediction, behavior prediction, and early warning of drone flight path deviation and collision, which provides more reaction time and means of response for airport management.

The completion and opening of the world's first 5G-A smart airport sensing base station not only demonstrates the great potential of 5G-A technology in the construction of smart airports, but also provides new ideas and directions for the safety and management of airports around the world. As the technology continues to advance and the scope of application expands, more airports will benefit from the innovations brought by 5G-A sensory integration technology in the future.
