Boeing is reportedly nearing a landmark agreement to sell 500 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to Chinese customers, potentially one of the largest commercial aircraft deals in aviation history. The announcement could coincide with a planned visit by U.S. President Donald Trump to Beijing, marking his first state trip to China since 2017.
The potential order, reported by Bloomberg News citing sources familiar with the negotiations, highlights renewed momentum in aviation trade between the United States and China. Discussions reportedly involve Chinese airlines and leasing companies acquiring hundreds of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, reinforcing the model’s role as one of the world’s most widely used narrowbody jets. Talks are also said to include a separate widebody component, potentially covering around 100 Boeing 787 Dreamliner and 777X aircraft. If finalized, the agreement would rank among the largest single commercial aircraft purchases ever recorded.
The 737 MAX family is designed for short- to medium-haul routes and features improved fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and enhanced operating economics compared with earlier generations of Boeing’s narrowbody aircraft. The 787 Dreamliner, built largely from composite materials, serves long-haul routes with reduced fuel consumption, while the upcoming 777X represents Boeing’s newest large widebody platform aimed at high-capacity international travel. Together, these aircraft cover a broad range of airline operational needs, from regional connectivity to intercontinental routes.
