Introduction of COMAC new assembly centre in Pudong Development Zone, Shanghai

General Introduction

In order to meet the production demand of the growing business in regional jet market as well as the assembly demand of C919 project, a new base to be located in Pudong Development Zone, Shanghai has been planned and is now under construction. Principally responsible for the development and production of large aircraft projects including the C919 project as well as the Sino-Russian Wide-body Aircraft project known as the C929, this new base is designed to be the paramount assembly & manufacturing centre based on the overall strategic planning of COMAC.

Introduction of assembly line

Projects under construction currently: 1. whole-aircraft interfacing line
2. horizontal tail assembly line
3. middle fuselage assembly line
4. central wing assembly line
5. mobile assembly line

Core principles of planning design: 1. Maximising flexibility/compatibility & scalability
2. Using lean boring and automatic drilling & riveting equipment
3. Minimising or eliminating the need for machine tools for assembly
4. Multiple installation in parallel
5. Safe and fast transportation (minimising the use of cranes)
6. Relaxing the requirements for indoor foundation
7. Integrating with logistics management

Main technical objectives to be achieved: 1. Digitalising measurement coordination
2. Automatisingdrilling& riveting of panel
3. Automatising boring of composite material
4. Automatising assembly interfacing
5. Integrating assembly test

Whole-aircraft interfacing line • Interfacing system is subjected to measurement and automatic altitude adjustment through laser tracker
• Boring connection is realised with light-duty flexible boring equipment (ADU+drilling template, flexible rail, crawling robot)
• Installation test has been completed
• Interfacing work for the first C919 aircraft was officially started on September 19th, 2014.
Horizontal tail assembly line • LOXIN virtual five-axis equipment is used for automatic boring
• Interfacing is realised with laser tracker-based measurement and automatic altitude adjustment system
• Horizontal tail is transferred through in-station automatic transport system and AGV
• Installation test has been substantially completed
• The assembly of horizontal tail for the first C919 was officially started on July 23rd, 2014.
Middle fuselage assembly line • Panel is assembled with MPAC automatic drilling & riveting equipment
• Assembly of middle fuselage is realised with laser tracker-based measurement and automatic attitude adjustment system
• Installation test on MPAC equipment has been completed
• The substantially installed positioning system is being tested
• The machine tools are being installed
Central wing assembly line • LOXIN virtual five-axis equipment is used for automatic boring
• General assembly of wing box is realised with laser tracker-based measurement and automatic attitude adjustment system
• Wing box is transferred through in-station automatic transport system and AGV
• Installation test on the equipment has been substantially completed
• Machine tools are being manufactured
Mobile assembly line Installation progress:
• Flexible load-carrying equipment and auxiliary machine tools
• Load-carrying equipment is driven with AGV cart
• Centralised power source
• Visualisation achieved by production monitoring system
Installation progress:
• Installation has been inspected and accepted
• Will be firstly applied on the test work of C919 assembly
