GATES to Add Infrastructural & Technological Upgrade to its Test Cell Operations

The engine heavy maintenance unit of GA Telesis, GA Telesis Engine Services (GATES) has recently announced a significant capital expenditure to upgrade its test cell operation to the highest standards and technology available. The new upgrade will provide the company with the most robust and modern test cell in mainland Europe and can easily transition towards testing the latest technology engines.

GATES and MDS Gas Turbine Engine Solutions have partnered to engineer and install the test cell for completion by the end of 2020. MDS is widely known as a leader in the market and has provided test cells to Pratt & Whitney, Siemens, and Rolls-Royce. The new facility will include major infrastructure upgrades as well.

The selection process focused on finding a partner and a solution that would ensure the future growth of GATES by offering increased productivity, increased data analysis, and testing capabilities for the newest technology engines. We ended up selecting MDS as a partner after the team went through a rigorous selection process with the leading test cell vendors, said Carsten Holm, Chief Operating Officer, GATES. The solution MDS offered will instantly double our test capacity by automating major parts of the test procedure and simultaneously allowing the test cell operator to capture and analyze vast amounts of real-time data, added Holm.

This investment into the state-of-the-art test cell is the latest action in their strategy in becoming the first choice engine MRO in Europe. The companys personnel growth has been double-digit for the past several years and will continue for the next four to five years. GATES is also adding new engine induction slots every month to meet the increasing market demand.

Earlier this month, GATES announced the opening of SPAH, its Special Procedures Aero-Engine Hospital with repair capabilities for CF6-80C2B, CFM56-5B and CFM56-7B engines.

In order not to damage the structure and surface layer, nondestructive testing becomes the first choice in the maintenance of aero-engine due to its complex structure.And more and more technologies are gradually transformed from manual operation to machine operation, among which simulation technology plays a very indispensable role.

Under this background, the Gas Turbine Engine Simulation Technology Development Forum 2020 will be held on October 15th - 16th, in Shenyang, China.
